You might want to get a subscription to the weekly Mount Desert Islander newspaper to check the classifieds.

I just returned from Bar Harbor on Sunday from a week-long vacation. I’m already planning a 2018 trip and was considering late May. Will the shops and restaurants that are typically closed during off-season, be reopened in late May? Or will they not open until June? Thank you.

Hi Donna, Bar Harbor has a way of getting into your system, doesn’t it? Yes, many of the businesses normally closed during off-season should be open by late May, as Memorial Day weekend has increasingly become busier. We plan on adding seasonal businesses to our blog listings, so perhaps that will be a project for this winter. Feel free to check back, and good luck on planning next year’s trip!

I think you should update the restaurants on your list. Many of these on the list are NOT open during the offseason anymore. Thanks.

Hi Leslie, thanks for the comment. We’ve been planning on doing a wholesale update of the listings, to also add seasonally open restaurants, lodging and other businesses. Haven’t had a chance to get to it yet, but will soon. Then both the year-round and seasonal listings will be available. But as with any such listings, always a good idea to check with the business before showing up, as things may change unannounced. Thanks again for being a careful reader!

This is a great list. Don’t forget the airport, serviced year round by Cape Air and Hertz Rental Car. Plus private flights arriving at Columbia Air Services. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment, and the reminder about the year-round transportation services. Will update accordingly. Any Snowy Owls at the airport?

Wild Iris Farm is open year round. During the winter they give carriage rides from the farm, complete with warm wool blankets, hot cocoa and sleigh bells.

Hi, Thanks for the list. Mystery Cove Book Shop on the Crooked Road in Hulls Cove, Bar Harbor is opened year round. We are Chamber members so I’ll spend our first snow day trying to figure out how to note that on it’s winter list. Thanks, Barbara

I love how you have listed year round businesses. We just bought an existing B & B on MDI ( in the Bar Harbor village of Salisbury Cove). We have restored the business back to B&B from vacation rental property status and we will have our 1st ( as of yet) guest on Valentine’s weekend !
We are excited to be year round and hope you will include our Inn in your year round listings .
    Thank you,
    Dana & Lena Hatch

Hi Janet, thanks for the comment on our new and evolving page on year-round lodging, restaurants, shopping and other businesses in Bar Harbor. Epi’s didn’t turn up on our initial search since we were relying on the membership lists of Bar Harbor Merchants Association, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Bar Harbor Bed & Breakfast Association for year-round businesses. We’ll take another look at our listing, and figure out a way to accommodate other businesses. Thanks again, and stay safe with the impending blizzard…..
